If you are thinking about joining Capella University, you probably know that FlexPath has no standard weekly deadlines or traditional tests. Instead, your whole grade is based on projects called assessments.
Before you sign up, it’s normal to ask yourself: how many Capella FlexPath assessments will I actually have to do for each class? Knowing the answer can help you to plan your schedule and manage your time. Let’s see what to expect so you can find a groove that works for you.
Average Number of Assessments per Course
One number does not fit all classes. That said, you can expect 3-6 Capella FlexPath assessments per course most of the time.
How many depends on your degree level and what you are studying:
- Bachelor’s Degrees (BSN, BS in Business, etc.): These courses generally contain 4 to 5 assessments. They concentrate on basic skills and plain writing.
- Master’s Degrees (MBA, MSN, etc.): Graduate courses typically comprise 3 to 4 assessments but are generally more comprehensive and involve deeper research.
Most students will find themselves in the 3 to 6 norm. Some unique courses or intro classes might be a little higher or lower.
What do these evaluations look like?
Capella FlexPath assessments are designed to mimic real-world work because there are no multiple-choice quizzes. You will demonstrate what you know by creating things that you would actually use in your career.
Say you’re studying nursing, for instance, an assessment might require you to write a patient safety plan. If you study business, you could create a financial spreadsheet and give a short presentation to explain it.

Quantity vs. Quality: The Rules of Rubrics
Because there are few Capella FlexPath assessments in each class, each assessment is worth a lot. You can’t rush through them. Projects are graded according to a scoring guide called a rubric.
You need to receive a “Proficient” or “Distinguished” on each of the grading criteria in order to pass the assessment and continue. If your assignment is missing a key piece of information, the professor will mark it as “Basic” and send it back to you to rewrite.
Pro Tip: Getting an assessment back for revision is part of the normal FlexPath journey. That doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It just means you have to correct one section and resubmit it.
How to Manage Your Workload Effectively
With FlexPath, you can enroll in up to two courses at a time, so managing your Capella FlexPath assessments will be the key to graduating fast and saving money on tuition. Successful students have a few simple tips:
- Immediate Look Ahead: When you open a new course, read the instructions for all the assessments. This allows your brain to reflect on the subject matter as you study.
- Using the Scoring Guide as an Outline: Use the exact wording of the rubric as headings in your papers. This makes it clear to the professor that you met each and every requirement.
- Maintain the Momentum: During the time it takes for the professor to mark assessment 1 (usually up to 48 hours), start research and writing for assessment 2. Never let your dashboard sit idle.
Summary: A Road to Graduation that You Can Handle
The number of Capella FlexPath assessments is small, but the expectations for each are professional and thorough. Instead of dozens of small homework assignments, you can focus on 3 to 6 high-quality projects per course and learn at your own pace so you can get your degree much faster and dive deep into the material.
