APA 7th Edition Example for Nursing Papers

Formatting a nursing paper is a challenge for many students. You work hours on solid content and then lose points because a citation is incorrect or a heading is off. Learning APA style can seem hard at first, but when you see a real APA 7 nursing paper example laid out in front of you, things start clicking. This guide will walk you through exactly what each section should look like so you can stop guessing and start writing with confidence.

The importance of APA to nursing programs

It’s not just about following rules for the sake of it. Nursing is a discipline founded on accurate information. If you cite a source correctly, your reader can find it, read it themselves, and verify what you said. Research informs the real-world decisions clinicians make about patient care. Sloppy citations break that chain of trust. Most nursing schools use APA 7th edition as the current standard, so getting comfortable with it early saves you a lot of headaches down the road.”

The Ideal Format for Your Title Page

Open up any good APA 7 nursing paper example, and you’ll see the title page is the same pattern. The paper title is bold and centered about one-third of the way down the page. Provide a title under 12 words long specific to your subject. Below the title, write your full name, then your department and university name, then the course number and name, your instructor’s name, and the due date. Each item on its own line, all centered.

One change in APA 7 from the previous edition is the running head. Students don’t need it anymore unless your instructor specifically asks for one. If you add it by default, you will look like you are using the old guidelines.

Writing the Abstracts

Your abstract is page two. Center the word Abstract at the top and bold it. Write your summary in one paragraph, without indenting the first line. Aim for somewhere between 150 and 250 words.

The abstract should cover four things. Your research question, your method, your main findings, and your key takeaway. Leave out the citations here. Use simple, straightforward language. Add a keywords line below the paragraph. Indent it slightly, write the word ‘Keywords’ in italics, and then list three to five terms that capture what your paper covers.

Writing the Body of Your Paper

Your paper title is repeated at the top of page three, centered and in bold. Your introduction starts immediately below it without a heading of Introduction. That is a rule that people often get wrong in APA.

Headings guide your reader. Most nursing papers only require two levels of headings. Level 1 Headings are bold and centered. Level 2 headings are bold type, left-margined. And if you want a 3rd level, it goes left-justified, bold italic. Keep your paragraphs short. One thought per paragraph, clearly stated and quickly moved past.

Getting In-Text Citations Right

You need to cite every idea you take from a source. In a good APA 7 nursing paper example, citations follow a simple pattern. For a paraphrase, you write the author’s last name and the year in parentheses. (Carter, 2022). For a direct quote, you add the page number: (Carter, 2022, p. 34).

When citing two authors, use an ampersand between them: (Carter & Mills, 2022). If there are three or more authors, shorten it to the first author’s name followed by et al.: (Carter et al., 2022).

No author? Use the first few words of the title in Italics. No date? Write n.d. where the year normally goes.

Making Your References Page

Start your references on a new page. At the top, center and bold the word ‘References’. Here are all the sources you cited in the paper, nothing more. Do not fill your list with sources you read but never used.

Indent each entry (hanging indent). The first line is flush left and subsequent lines are indented one-half inch.

Here’s what a journal article in a proper APA 7 nursing paper example looks like:

Walker, S. T., & Nguyen, P. L. (2023). Patient outcomes of community nursing programs. Journal of Clinical Nursing Practice, 38(2), 88-97. https://doi.org/10.1098/jcnp.2022.038

The _Journal Name_, _Volume Number_ _Issue Number_. The number in parentheses is the issue number. This doesn’t. The DOI is printed in full at the end.

Common Mistakes People Make All the Time

People forget to italicize the names of journals. Others include a running head, which APA 7 no longer requires for students. Some students will have a reference entry for a source that is never cited in the paper, or vice versa. Before submitting, read through your in-text citations and your reference list side by side. No reference without a citation. All references shall be cited somewhere in the paper.”
