    For my 50-hour practicum at the Cleveland Clinic, I helped with many nursing informatics projects that enhance the quality of healthcare, patient safety, and clinical workflow. As a member of the nursing informatics team, I witnessed technology being used in the nursing profession throughout the day with patients and saw how the data drives decision-making in various departments for evidence-based practice.

    Much of my practicum experience focused on learning about the electronic health record (EHR) and its use in clinical documentation, medication administration, care planning, and communication between disciplines. Analyzed the documentation process to determine areas for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to organizational standards. Additionally, I noticed how clinical decision support systems (CDSS) can give instant alerts and reminders, as well as evidence-based recommendations, to help healthcare providers minimize medication errors and enhance patient outcomes.
    I participated in interdisciplinary meetings throughout the practicum to hear the nurse, informatics specialist, quality improvement personnel, and information technology professionals discuss the various technology projects in progress. The purpose of these meetings was to maximize the effectiveness of the EHR, enhance user satisfaction, streamline workflow, and review quality measures. Learned a lot about project planning, engaging stakeholders, system implementation strategies, and change management in a large healthcare organization.

    I also had the opportunity to review clinical quality dashboards, which tracked the reporting of important clinical metrics like Patient Falls, Hospital-Acquired Infections, Medication Safety, Documentation Compliance, and Patient Satisfaction. Working under the supervision of my preceptor, I examined the trends of quality data and talked with them about the role of informatics tools in support of the continuous quality improvement initiatives. I gained insight into the importance of documentation and standardised data collection in ensuring patient-centred care, compliance with regulations, and reporting within the organisation.

    A key part of the practicum was also helping with new enhancements to the EHR that were implemented in the education program. Witnessed staff training and contributed to the development of learning resources to encourage good practice in documentation and the use of clinical information systems. The experiences reinforced my knowledge of adult learning principles and the need to help the clinicians in their technology adoption.

    In conclusion, the practicum contributed positively to my understanding of the nursing informatics competencies, health care information systems, data analysis, and quality improvement. This experience reinforced the importance of nurse informaticists in blending both clinical practice and technology for better health care delivery. These 50 practicum hours gave me increased confidence in the use of informatics principles and concepts to enhance patient safety, patient effectiveness, interprofessional collaboration, and evidence-based nursing practice in the technologically advanced health care environment.
