This presentation will define the professional persona and proactive skills required of an emergency room nurse. The ability to lead, work in and manage a team, verbal and written communication, flexibility, innovation, critical thinking, and other related skills will positively impact the quality of service delivered to patients. This assessment will detail the application of each of these skills to past experiences and will focus on the cultivation of these skills and the strategies geared towards the development of professionalism. It will focus on my specific requirements, the strategies I will implement for my continual growth, and professionalism at the workplace.

Professional Skills and Attributes

The emergency room (ER) nurse, more than other nurses, requires a unique set of professional skills and attributes. Communication and management skills, teamwork, and flexible problem-solving skills are key in this area of nursing. An example is the use of interpersonal skills to communicate the details of a patient to colleagues to avoid an informal handover. It was important in the instructional emergency case that the team understood their role and responded to the emergency.

Flexibility and problem-solving skills are related. I triaged a Maximum Heart Output (MHO) case and solved the problem of multiple trauma by identifying and prioritizing the needs of a patient and mobilizing a team to meet each need while creating capacity to respond to new challenges. Compassionate attributes enhance not only the condition of the patient, but positively alter the staff and patient relationship.

About one of the professional skills, the following story happened. It became apparent one extremely hot day that the emergency room staff were dealing with a large number of patients suffering from dehydration (Taylor & Jones, 2022). This would have a huge effect, so I immediately organized a one-day seminar for the health care team in order to address early preparedness for such occurrences. Furthermore, it showed my problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork skills in the dehydration problem (fluid balance) of my staff and the care plan for the patient.

The direct effect of this was a highly effective team that was able to provide the right care and thus reduced the complications that occurred to the patient. Finally, after the heat spell, the medical management appreciated what we had done and gave awards to the best-performing team. This shows my ability to assess and manage a situation and my teamwork skills in order to achieve the goals I set of critical thinking and leadership in this situation.

Personal Examples of Professional Presence

Being in the Emergency Department while several ‘pile-up’ trauma patients were arriving at the same time helped me develop my professional presence (Bieler et al., 2020). Even with the intensity and high levels of urgency, I was able to control the time I spent on each assignment, communicate and be transparent with the patients and my team, and prioritize and ration the medical resources.

I was able to direct the nursing assistants, and further to that, work with the physicians to ensure I completed my actions within the necessary time constraints. I was able to situationally lead and be present in the defining moments of the event, which demonstrated my professional presence and highlighted the importance of communication and teamwork in an emergency setting.

Strategies for Developing Professional Skills

I will gain professional competency through my participation in education and introspection (self-study) as an apprentice. To remain current in the nursing profession, I will enroll in workshops and courses, and further my education and certification in critical care and pediatrics. I will also utilize evidence-based literature and innovations to ensure my nursing practice is current.

Additionally, I will utilize my clinical preceptors to gain valuable personal insight to help me build critical clinical and leadership decision-making practices. This will build my competency in a safe and constructive manner (Monteiro, 2023). Also, self-reflection, colleague feedback, and review of patient outcomes will help me develop critical clinical thinking, decision-making, and communication skills. Lastly, self-reflection on my performance, strengths, and weaknesses will help me foster a desire to perform at a higher level of nursing.

Implementation of Development Strategies

To execute these strategies, I enrolled in online critical care nursing courses to arm myself with the best information. I will also adjust my schedule to allow facilitated case discussions with senior nurses during which we will analyze challenging cases and provide feedback on the rationale behind the decisions. I will also spend one week of every month engaged in personal reflection, evaluation of patient outcomes, and peer review to help identify those areas that I am currently unable to. I am assured that with these programs, I will be able to develop and improve my clinical skills, communications, and leadership in a real-time format (Leonard et al., 2022).

Strategies for Maintaining Professionalism

To be better organized and more pragmatic with my professional approach, I plan to work on my self-care, stress management, and self-education. I understand that nursing, particularly in the ER, is a taxing profession. Therefore, I will take my leave for treatment when I begin to feel exhaustion and enter into the long consultations if I begin to feel anxiety (Afaya et al., 2021). This will help me to be present and objective for my subsequent shifts. I also plan to stay current with the trends of technical competency in the profession through continued enrollment in workshops and certification. The work-life balance will also serve as a profession-keeping tool to help me avoid the overwork that leads to a lack of professionalism.

The reports will be shared with coworkers and managers, and suggestions will be implemented as appropriate. One of these would be advocating for feedback meetings in order to determine the means of improvement, be it one to become a better leader, speaker, or caregiver of a patient. I am especially motivated to develop my leadership skills and therefore want to increase my involvement with the team as well as with the changes that occur with the processes of the ER (Forsey, 2022).

This involves the opportunity of dealing with complicated case scenarios as well as being an opportunity for offering teamwork and patient care. Each of these experiences will have to be repeated in my mind several times to be able to make the necessary adjustments to my disposition with the aim of ensuring the highest levels of professionalism in my career.

Three fundamental principles encompass Nursing professionalism: emancipatory learning, critical self-awareness, and emotionally capable practice. With the help of professional development programs, mentorships, and self-care, I will work on improving my clinical decision-making and my leadership within multidisciplinary teams.

These are some of the ways Human Resource Management can ensure my flexibility and competency, and will allow me to maintain a sustainable culture within the workflow, while still helping me maintain my wellness and avoiding burnout. This approach is primarily for my professional advancement; in the long run, this will help improve the quality of care provided to the T patients in the ER.
