Meeting Details

The virtual check-in (VCI) meeting took place on April 14, 2026, at around 2.30 pm. There were two participants in the meeting: the DNP student and the course instructor. The preceptor will not be at the instructor’s location but will follow up with the instructor by e-mail to ensure that the project is on track.

Summary of Key Points

The VCI was directed at reviewing the proposed project topic for the DNP and setting new expectations for the new course. The original project topic was uncontrolled hypertension in females, but it was brought up by an instructor who said that because of the nature of the setting, a measurable outcome was not possible because the patient would be discharged before they could experience any measurable outcome from the intervention. There was a recommended change in topic to a more stable, measurable topic, and example topics are hand hygiene compliance or pressure ulcer prevention. 

To help clarify, the instructor explained that there needs to be a clearly identified and described practice gap that isn’t already being addressed, and a clearly described and measurable intervention. In addition, a well-constructed PICO question should be provided. A minimum of 3 peer-reviewed articles must be used for the current course, and a minimum of 5 will be required for the next course. The preceptor will follow up with the instructor directly to ensure that the project that the student has is progressing at the expected pace.

Reflect on Project Progress

The VCI meeting has indicated that efforts through student involvement in the VCI meeting and as a result of the sound guidance of their teacher, who focused on their project direction, have been made. The meeting emphasized the importance of choosing a project topic that fits within the scope of the clinical setting under study and that offers measurable results within the time frame of the project implementation. The teacher’s feedback on the modification from uncontrolled hypertension in women to persistent hypertension is also a good redirection for the student because it will now be more feasible to accomplish as a project.

The student showed engagement in the meeting by agreeing to follow the advice of the instructor and planning to make further changes to the scope of the project. The shift in project topic will give a direct method to determine a practice gap, develop an intervention that can be measured, and meet the evidence requirement throughout the sequence of the DNP course.

Areas of Uncertainty

Multiple sources of ambiguity were uncovered at the VCI meeting. Firstly, because of a hospital-based discharge environment, the discussion of uncontrolled hypertension in females could not be completely implemented and measured, and the student needs to select another subject that can be fully implemented and measured. Secondly, the instructor proposed a list of alternative topics, including hand hygiene or pressure ulcers, and the student needs to identify which topic is most suitable for the clinical site and practice gap.

Thirdly, there is a need for clarification around the process of creating the PICO question, practice gap, and intervention to be used for a new topic that has been selected. The student is required to conduct a preliminary literature search to identify at least three research articles to support the student’s new topic for this course. The preceptor’s role in the future may involve giving the instructor an email for alignment purposes that will help to finalize the direction of the student’s project.

Conclusion

For 2015, the suggestion from the instructor to research persistent hypertension or a different research construct that is wholly implementable will guarantee that the DNP project can attain the desired goals of measurability and evidence. The student can now seek out other projects to try in the wake of the teacher’s direct feedback and can complete a literature review in order to complete program requirements.
