    Reflection on Nursing Core Values and Ethical Standards

    Ethical principles, values, and professional identity guide the nursing practice in order to inform clinical judgment and leadership. The culture of teams and healthcare systems is determined by the core values of integrity, compassion, and liability, which define individual practice. Professional associations and evidence-based plans increase the leadership capacity of nurses in terms of ethics and equity (Grace et al., 2024). The current paper will highlight the importance of applying ethical principles in practice to enhance professional identity and patient-centered outcomes.

    Reflection on My Professional Identity and Nursing Core Values

    I am going to use scientific competence, ethical responsibility, and relational presence as a combination of the professional identity of a nurse. According to the American Nurses Association (ANA), a professional identity in nursing is based on the principles of ethics, support, and life-long learning (American Nurses Association, 2025). Human dignity and patient rights, and acting as an intermediary between bedside realities and systems change. As an advanced practice clinician, I will be required to make multi-layered decisions in a straightforward manner and cooperate with the patients and groups.

    I attempt to apply the main values of nursing in specific aspects. Integrity is also manifested in terms of honest consent arguments, proper documentation, and admission of errors. Altruism is demonstrated through prioritizing patient needs, mentoring of peers, and covering of hard cases so that continuity of care can be attained. Trauma-informed communication, active listening, and comfort are the manifestations of compassion (Mohamed and Abdelrahman, 2025). The manifestation of courage can be seen in raising concerns about unsafe orders, reporting them, and seeking ethics consults.

    Name ambiguity, requesting feedback, and solicitation of second opinions are examples of humility. Advocacy is being exercised through the remedy of social drivers like transport, cost, and housing, besides targeting relevant appeals. Caring is demonstrated by providing timely analgesia, repositioning of a patient, and teaching with the use of a teach-back technique. Autonomy is maintained through the balanced choices and encouragement of informed refusal. Humanity means perceiving entire individuals, rather than diagnoses, and being healthy to stay alive (Mohamed & Abdelrahman, 2025). Social justice is realized through advocating equal services and non-discriminatory work processes.

    I have such strengths as ethical clarity, safety support, and cultural awareness. Regular diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) promises comprise matching language to education, bias minimization by using structured tools, appreciation of cultural preferences, and warm handoff to community resources (Morrison et al., 2021). I provide a culture of psychological security, non-discriminatory language, and the sharing of opportunities with my colleagues. These practices enhance my professional self-identity and lead to a better outcome.

    The professional identity of the nurse and individual values can be traced in professional organizations like the ANA, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma), the International Council of Nurses (ICN), and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Its mission to support nursing in the well-being of everyone and the ANA Code of Ethics are in line with the principles of integrity, advocacy, social justice, autonomy, and humanity (American Nurses Association, 2025).

    Sigma is also well-known in terms of leadership and service, which contributes to altruism, humility, inclusivity, and commitment to evidence-based caring (Sigma Global Nursing Excellence, 2025). The ICN and AANP go further by endorsing the idea of advanced practice roles and international standards, promoting the values of compassion, courage, and accountability.

    Integrity, compassion, equity, and lifelong learning are some of the individual nursing values that relate to the organizational missions and values. Through these standards, nurses are kept in mind that professional identity is an individual action and the provision of ethical patient-centered care on a systems level. Such organizations help reinforce individual practice and enhance skills through the provision of moral guidance, policy toolkit, and standards, which help in the process of making clinical decisions.

    Reflection on Modeling Ethical Behavior in Nursing Practice and Leadership

    Professional identity is based on the ethics of nursing that are grounded in beneficence, nonmaleficence, respect of autonomy, justice, fidelity, privacy, and accountability. These values are manifested in the daily practice of the nurse as he communicates freely, discusses informed consent, and ensures accurate documentation. They focus on patient safety, confidentiality, and the possibilities to admit and learn, considering it a key aspect (Cheraghi et al., 2023).

    The nurse uses ethics in practice as a leader because he sets clear expectations, reports safety concerns in time, and coaches people to make wise choices. In cases where unprofessional conduct is noted, I take decisive action to save the lives of patients and regain confidence. The first thing that I would do is to promote immediate patient safety by interrupting and stopping dangerous activities. This is preceded by the objective recording of facts and application of structured communication, e.g., situation, background, assessment, and recommendation (SBAR), to raise the concerns with the relevant supervisor (Noh and Park, 2021). In case the problem is chronic and systemic, I make an incident report, seek an ethics consultation, or engage in risk management review, and advocate for affected patients and staff with open communication and emotional safety.

I display my clinical competence at the bedside by simulating or role-playing in high-risk situations and giving direct, specific feedback using the observe, describe, and coach methodology.

    It was demonstrated that learners mentored in a way that supports psychological safety, systematic feedback, and facilitated reflection become more competent, self-assured, and remain in the profession (Mikkonen et al., 2021).
