What are some of your personal goals for personal, professional, and leadership development that you will achieve in the practicum experience?
The objectives that drive me during this practicum include sharpening my practice of organization, my level of self-care, and my overall resiliency. This will enable me to better withstand the pressures associated with the clinical arena and still achieve a semblance of equilibrium in my life. In the course of my professional practice, I will incorporate more evidence-based nursing practice, cultivate a greater spirit of collaboration within multidisciplinary teams, and focus on patient-centered outcomes that will influence positive change in the health of populations.
Additionally, I plan to enhance my understanding of health informatics and data for designing integrated care. As I acquire more skills in reasoning, cultural awareness, and team motivation, I will become a competent, caring nurse leader and ultimately will be positioned to bring forth equal, quality care in my clinical arena.
Reflect on your feelings about DEI principles and implicit bias. How do these principles shape your actions and decisions in your designated discipline? How does implicit bias impact our development as professionals and leaders?
I believe that everyone should be a part of positive change. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will influence the way I engage with patients and ensure they receive culturally sensitive, individual, and private care. I believe that understanding and appreciating individual differences aid in equitable treatment and positively influence the experience and outcome of patients.
Because of this, I am grateful that I actively challenge the assumptions of others and support vulnerable populations. Although implicit bias remains hidden, it can affect decision-making and interpersonal relationships and also result in inequities in the care provided to patients. I will strive to eliminate biases, make clinical decisions with fairness, and foster an environment where caring and respectful relationships are the norms through active self-reflection and the pursuit of constructive feedback.
What steps can you take to further incorporate DEI principles into your practicum experience?
With the principles of DEI and my practicum, I would incorporate inclusivity, consideration of one’s culture, and equity into every interaction with people in my care. I would go to every available training/ workshop to bolster my understanding of the people I serve. In order to better my inclusivity strategy, I would ask the mentors, preceptors, and clients for positive feedback. I would partake in self-reflection and journaling to record and document my attempts at DEI strategy implementation. From all of this, I hope to foster a clinical environment full of respect, justice, and sensitivity to culture.
Consider a recent interaction with a client. How did you incorporate DEI principles into this interaction? What could you have done differently to better promote DEI?
I embraced their feedback and wishes, and I included their preferences in the care plan. I did this to foster both engagement and trust. Although this made me feel that I was making progress, I recognized that I had not gone deep enough in exploring the areas to learn their true needs. I plan to make progress in my practice by remembering to ask open-ended questions and incorporate their feedback while making culturally competent referrals. This will help me to provide more inclusive and equitable care.
How can you leverage your specialization courses to help you prepare for your MSN capstone project?
The specialization courses have given me a strong foundation to undertake the MSN capstone project. The evidence-based practice courses have trained me to analyze clinical research and apply findings to clinical issues. The informatics courses enhanced my analytical skills to be able to interpret clinical data and identify trends in patient care using technology.
I have gained a deeper understanding of ethical decision-making, healthcare systems, and the provision of equitable care in my leadership and policy courses. The skills I gain in the practicum will be used for problem-solving in a real-world context and collaborating with a cross-functional team to design and implement solutions that are evidence-based and will lead to sustainable improvement.
