Also, Communication is one of the basic needs in Disaster management at all levels and fields of operation. In the case of Hurricane Ian, a lack of interprofessional communication proved to be an issue when it came to helping to respond to and limit infections in impacted communities, and with unsynchronized messages in public health. Studies have proven that the system of structured communication minimizes medical errors and enhances coordination within the teams during emergency response (Alsabri et al., 2020). The consistency of communication procedures is important in relation to the safety of people’s health and disaster response, and how the communications of different departments are integrated.

Facilitating Communication

Interprofessional communication interventions have proven to be very effective in enhancing communication and collaboration between different healthcare teams in disaster situations during catastrophes. Positive results of implementing SBAR with regard to communication errors and improving clinical decision-making during an emergency are known (Farzaneh et al., 2023). After a while, the language of communication devices — what people are used to — merges with the professional world and promotes the uniformity of the agencies responding and the balance of communication.

The organized interprofessional teams are the ones that get to talk about it at the daily briefings and debriefing sessions, where they discuss issues that come up. The response to Hurricane Ian was executed in the form of unified command centers where the real-time information was shared with the emergency responders, healthcare providers, and public health officials. Frequent team huddles have been shown to improve situational awareness and also reduce duplication of services (Lai et al., 2024).

Team Dynamics

Team dynamics are important factors that influence successful disaster response interventions and directly impact the health outcomes of the population during disasters. Responsibility and defined leadership levels will prevent efforts from becoming duplicated and provide for effective resource distribution in the management of Hurricane Ian. Having clearly defined roles within a team has been proven to result in faster response times and improved patient outcomes (Weller et al., 2024). It is also important to achieve the desired results in relation to public health and coordinated disaster management (DM) activities, for which team dynamics are also relevant.

The influence of interprofessional teams is important for trust and psychological safety, for openness to communication, and readiness to report any possible issues or concerns. NWS teams with modern trust were also very flexible in addressing new ways to deal with unexpected infection control issues in emergency shelters during Hurricane Ian. SafeBrains is a tool that is proven to help teams share safety concerns and act on them more quickly (Ahmad, 2025). There is a good interpersonal relationship among team members, resulting in success in disaster response services and the protection of the health of the community.

Assumptions

It assumes that the delays are caused by reported communication failures and that there are no other factors in the environment or system that could cause the delays to be reported. The research results obtained in the simulated healthcare environment are assumed to be easily transferable to disaster environments with limited resources (Lai et al., 2024). These assumptions take into account the natural limitations but do provide a general guideline as to how to think about a team’s performance during a public health emergency.

Interprofessional Communication Tools and Techniques

Communication tools and techniques are the pillars on which effective interprofessional collaboration can be attained in the event of disasters and emergencies in matters of public health. The SBAR communication model proves especially efficient in the standardization of information sharing and the minimization of miscommunication between different medical workers. All communication methods will gradually evolve and support communication for the team and the consistent transmission of information to all parties concerned with the responding organizations.

Geographically separated workforce information is supported through the use of digital communication systems and electronic health records to offer real-time access and coordination. The Hurricane Ian response included distributing information on infection control to responders on the ground in many counties via mobile health apps. Various digital communication platforms have been in place to minimize the time required to respond to a disaster, while also improving disaster resource allocation and use (Abbas and Miller, 2025). The technologically facilitated communication systems continue to improve communication between various actors and the effectiveness of the disaster response among a wide range of the population.

Assumptions

The given analysis assumes that communication tools would work if the infrastructure is not harmed and technological resources are available on a regular basis in case of a disaster. It presupposes that the interprofessional team members should be adequately trained and digitally literate enough to be capable of utilizing the sophisticated technologies of communication in the required way. It has been found that the value of the various tools is related to the culture and support provided by leaders to the interprofessional collaboration (Levesque et al., 2022). These types of assumptions are cognizant of constraints that can be accumulated as they provide recommendations and guidelines on how the effectiveness of communication can be determined in case of disaster responses.

Conclusion

Among the pillars of good disaster management, and a direct influence on population health outcomes in case of disasters is interprofessional communication. The sharing of evidence on communication technologies and the promotion of positive relationships within the team support better coordination of the various responding bodies and communities of the profession.

However, further refinement and thinking on how to communicate the response mechanisms are required to meet the new challenges and adjust to the new demands. Eventual protection of community health is delivered by investing in communication infrastructure and training between professions to be resilient to a disastrous event.
