What motivated you to pursue your chosen field of study?
Effective actions aimed at alleviating the needs in people have been the first trigger that prompted me to consider becoming a nurse. My life was devoted to the observation of how helpful and well-trained nurses could be in the case of some of the most unsafe circumstances in the life of a person. The nurses play the focal point to the healthcare provision, in the support of the sick and in the advocacy for the needs of the patients or the assurance of the families of the patient.
As I went on with my nursing practice, I understood that I had to possess a greater degree of knowledge and leadership skills to enhance patient outcomes and influence the greater healthcare system. A master’s degree in nursing will help me to become more efficient by providing me with the opportunity to improve my clinical reasoning, become a better leader, and advocate better and more efficiently on behalf of patients and communities. I am motivated by the fact that I can grow personally and professionally, and hence, will be able to support other people in a competent and humane manner.
What is your professional identity? What are your values, beliefs, and work goals?
The concept that guides my professional identity is that of a responsible, caring and integrity-oriented nurse. The core values of nursing that I employ in my work include the value of compassion, human dignity, ethical practice, and patient-centered care. I believe that safe, fair and quality healthcare should be offered to everyone regardless of their background or circumstances. I welcome collaboration and effective communication since I understand that an effective nursing practice is founded on the principle of teamwork and respect towards a colleague. I would also like to provide evidence-based care, advance patient needs, and improve the general quality enhancement in the healthcare. Another feature that I consider significant is lifelong learning as a master-level nursing student because the field of nursing is dynamic, and, in the given area, research, technology, and healthcare policy continue to evolve.
What do you believe is the impact that DEI has on your attitudes, beliefs, or actions as a professional?
The variables of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) significantly affect my professional work in the field of nursing. Such values make me think about my bias and remember how social, cultural, and systemic factors influence the well-being of patients and their access to care. DEI leads me to the conclusion that no one can receive fair healthcare by treating all people in a similar way, but by admitting and eliminating personal needs and challenges. This, practically, involves listening to patients with a closed mind, valuing cultural diversity, and trying to provide an equitable treatment system. DEI also defines my relationships with other employees because it establishes inclusiveness, respect, and collaboration. DEI will allow me, as a nurse, to provide a more holistic, ethical, and patient-focused care and make a contribution to a healthcare environment that values each voice and experience.
What are some of the challenges or expectations that you anticipate in this program?
I anticipate this master’s degree program to be rigorous and will be accompanied by good time management and discipline. There may be occasions when professional responsibilities, personal responsibilities, and coursework are challenging to manage. I also expect to come across an intellectual challenge, particularly when operating at higher levels of clinical concepts, leadership theories, and evidence-based practice. Doubt is likely to happen sometime as I relate to new demands and higher academic standards. However, I believe that such barriers represent a development. In my opinion, this program will improve my leadership, critical thinking, and confidence. I also look forward to the in-depth discussion with colleagues and faculty members, as the experience of diversified arguments will help me to develop as a nursing practitioner and a future leader.
What are the personal, academic, or professional goals you hope to achieve through this program?
I am optimistic that through this program in a master’s degree, I will be able to achieve certain personal, academic, and professional goals. In educational practice, I would prefer to possess a strong foundation in advanced nursing knowledge, application of research, and leadership concepts. Regarding my career direction, I want to expand my area of practice and be prepared to serve in a leadership or advanced practice role, in which I would be able to make a positive change in patient care and health outcomes.
I am also hoping to achieve another aspect, which is to become a patient advocate, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and contribute to a policy or organizational change. As an individual, I would wish to be more confident, resilient, and self-aware as a nurse leader. Lastly, this program is an assurance of becoming a better, competent, ethical, and compassionate nurse and capable of becoming a leader who has a high level of competence and empathy.
