Introduction to Conflict Resolution
One solution to dealing with conflict is to face and resolve disputes in a positive and respectful manner. Health care causes disputes due to high levels of stress, similarities in forms of communication, lack of job descriptions, and conflicting priorities of employees (American Nurses Association, 2023). As an illustration, when the health care team members hold varying opinions and views on the decision-making process of a given patient, then unless dealt with effectively, such conflicts may soon escalate quite fast. Thus, the leaders must seek means of settling conflicts in a manner that does not cause adverse impacts in terms of teamwork, worker satisfaction, or patient care.
The Main Ideas of Conflict Resolution in Healthcare
The main concepts of conflict resolution
Conflicts can be of various types in health care settings. They are inter-professional conflicts, inter-personal conflicts, and organizational conflicts. Role clarity is an example of an inter-professional conflict (Botchwey et al., 2023). One of the examples of organizational conflict would be instances in which an organization is confronted with introducing conflicting policies or rival resources. In addition to types, it’s also important to distinguish between conflict that can be Constructive versus Destructive. Positive outcomes can be achieved with constructive conflicts, e.g., the opportunity to discuss and brainstorm as a complete group representing the whole team.
Communication and Collaboration Role
There are three types of conflicts: interpersonal, interprofessional, and Organizational. A case of an interpersonal conflict is when two individuals end up being in disagreement due to their varying value systems or the manner in which they communicate. An excellent instance of an Interprofessional conflict is when two professionals are collaborating yet not familiar with each other’s job duties (Meneses-La-Riva, Declasse, Suen et al., 2025). Finally, conflicts are also at an organizational level. Constructive conflicts will make people openly communicate and generate ideas on how to solve the problems. Destructive conflict will cause additional sub-division and /or tension among the employees, communication barriers, and low productivity.
Communication Strategies for Conflict Resolution
Leaders in healthcare organizations should support their staff in using particular strategies that will assist them in effectively communicating when conflict arises. Listening is one such strategy. This may make one less defensive since, by listening to someone, he feels that he was heard (Nikitara et al., 2024). Communication should be open and honest because this may bring about clarity in an organization and build trust. Tools like SBAR contribute to effective communication whether the situation is challenging or not. Another crucial tactic is to have feedback to help in curbing conflict escalation. All members of the organization must feel supported using these strategies, thus increasing teamwork.
Strategies for Administrators for Conflict Resolution
The strategies that administrators can use to deal with conflict are numerous and allow them to cope with the problem. Preventing conflict through early intervention by the administrators is one of their strategies, but some of the staff might be too opposed to reporting conflict. The other manner in which administrators can handle conflict is through mediation. Mediation is when the two opposing parties are brought together by the administrator to have discussions to resolve the conflict; however, mistrust is often an issue when mediating. Further training of the administrators could assist them in handling conflict by offering training in conflict resolution to them, but they might lack the time to train because of other responsibilities. Administrators can also deal with conflict using a culture that facilitates respect, though resistance to change is an issue.
