My practicum hours totaled 50 hours, one of which was at Mayo Clinic in the outpatient primary care and specialty consultation setting. The whole hours were unpaid, and under a certified preceptor, and were not a part of the employment responsibilities.

As part of my practicum experience, I have performed extensive and intensive patient examinations, which include the collection of patient history, review of the systems, medication reconciliation, and the physical examination. I collaborated with my preceptor to unveil the differential diagnosis and the individualized care plan with the chronic patients with diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, heart disease, and mood disorders. I, too, found the experience of deciphering laboratory results, diagnostic imaging, and specialty consultation reports to arrive at the appropriate clinical decision to be a great experience.

Another important aspect of my practicum hours was also my preventive care and health maintenance practicum hours. The health checkups, risk checkups, immunization checkups, and cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mental health screening examinations were all part of my involvement.

Another area I participated in was the education of patients regarding the issues of lifestyle change, medication, diet planning, stress management, and self-management of the disease. The activities would enhance my expertise in communication and would facilitate the importance of making decisions as a collective and providing culturally responsive care.

My other work experience involved working in an interdisciplinary environment with physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and specialty consultants to put together the holistic patient care. The engagement with the case discussions enabled me to get to know more about the integrated models of care and continuity of care across specialties. The reflective feedback on my clinical reasoning with my preceptor made me identify the areas of my professional growth, as well as the areas that need further development in my clinical reasoning.

This nationally reputed healthcare facility assisted me in enhancing my competency in advanced assessment, evidence-based management, interdisciplinary teamwork, and patient education during 50 organized practicums. The experience offered a plethora of support to my clinical confidence and willingness to work in advanced nursing practice and maintain high-quality and safety standards in working with patients.
