Social workers have a valuable framework in human behavior theories to explain the interaction of human beings with their social and cultural environment (Ide & Beddoe, 2023). These theories will allow the practitioner to evaluate the needs of clients, develop the related interventions, and analyze the results in an informed and culturally responsive way. They also point out the impacts of development stages, identity, and social systems on an individual’s experience and decision-making. Theory and practice must therefore go together in having good and ethical social work.

The paper uses Erikson’s psychosocial development theory to examine the Hofsa case of a young Somali immigrant struggling with cultural, developmental, and interpersonal issues. In such collectivist societies, like Somali culture, the decision-making process is more likely to be influenced by family and community expectations. This limitation can be solved by comparing the ecological systems theory with Erikson’s theory by Erikson.

The process of applying human behavior theories in social work practice assists practitioners in formulating culturally responsive and theoretically informed interventions.
