Initial Thoughts: What do you think causes domestic violence?

I believe domestic violence is a multifactorial problem comprising biological, psychological, and social concerns. It may be due to problems of managing anger, childhood behavior, and socio-cultural factors that are likely to normalize violence.

The issue of domestic violence is a complex one, both in the biological the psychological, social, acquired behaviours, to the societal norms, the lack of adequate regulation of emotions.

Identify a part of the brain responsible for negative emotions such as anger (see Chapter 9).

One of the emotions that is processed by the amygdala is anger. It is important that when a human being triggers a fight or flight response to the threat they face.

A neuron sends electrical signals via the axon to spread messages across synapses and enable neurotransmitters to pass the messages across synapses at a very high speed, so that emotions and responses can be processed promptly.

Describe operant conditioning (Chapter 5).

Operant conditioning refers to a type of learning that entails the influence of behavior by consequences. Positive reinforcement refers to the encouragement of a behavior, and punishment refers to the discouragement of a behavior.

Describe how operant conditioning might work with violence as a learned behavior.

Violence can be rewarded by the use of operant conditioning, and in that case, can be reinforced and repeated. When one person has applied violence, and it brings about obedience, or he has to avoid confrontation, he can redo it. It comes to a habit of accomplishing their goals.

Aggression can be learned through the punishment of children to help them deal with their frustrations, and this may lead to more aggressive behavior in adulthood.

Describe observational or social learning (Chapter 5).

The process of social learning involves acquiring behaviors through observation and reproduction on the basis of the behavior of other people in the social environment. This is influenced by observing the consequences of the behaviors of others, either the parents or the peers, and their consequences.

Describe how social learning might work with violence as a learned behavior.

The social learning theory holds that children who observe domestic violence as a type of behavior may later develop the idea of viewing it as a normal behavior. They may later on repeat this behavior in their own relationships, depending on what they observe within the various environments.

Describe Schachter and Singer’s Theory of Emotions (Chapter 9).

I was able to create the perception of the causes of domestic violence by relying on the works of neuroscience (e.g., the role played by the amygdala, in relation to anger), cognitive psychology (e.g., the reinforcement of violent behavior), and even social psychology (e.g., observational learning).

Describe confirmation bias (Chapter 7).

Confirmation bias refers to the disposition to seek and perceive new information to support one already held beliefs or hypotheses. With domestic violence, one may only be inclined to find evidence that may indicate that violence is learned, but not instances to accompany it as biological or environmental factors.

Describe how confirmation bias might have affected your thoughts on the information you gathered about violence.

Confirmation bias may have influenced my thoughts because I only spent my time on evidence that supports that violence is learned and maintained in environments and not on the evidence of other factors that contribute to the creation of these environments.

Psychology educates on anger and violence and is able to explain how anger, which is not well controlled, may result in violent acts. Meanwhile, demonstrating how the normalization of violence is facilitated by cognitive biases as well as social learning that occurs within the family, among peers, and in media contexts, explains why violence occurs in various cultures and societies.

Despite the lack of a specific anger treatment, psychologists have the option to develop the programs of intervention that will inform people. They would be able to facilitate the implementation of social learning interventions, modify adverse social norms, and provide services to vulnerable people who experience violence.

The skills are good in detecting indicators of aggression, understanding what causes violent behaviors, and consequently implementing measures that avoid violence in a given professional or alternative environment.

The prevention plan suggested by the CDC, which entails educating children on healthy relationships, is a sound methodology but may not necessarily avert entrenched cultural requirements in various societies that condone or tolerate violence.

Healthy Relationships: In mutual respect, it is known, and it is not violent.

Cultural norms: These are common beliefs or practices in a society that could affect what behaviors are, such as aggression.

Analyze Assumptions and Biases. 

Assumption: 1. The program presupposes the eventual access to educational materials by all children.

Assumption: 2. The program even assumes that every child will and is receptive and responsive to education provided to them, without consideration to any and every background or past experiences.

Examine the Evidence. Describe the type of evidence you would need to support or disprove your claim.

The evidence required entails information on longitudinal research that demonstrates whether education on healthy relationships causes a reduction in violence in the long run, most importantly in high-risk communities.

Weigh Conclusions. 

In order to determine whether this strategy is effective or not, I will address the various cultures and their effects with consideration to both the short and long-term outcomes. I would also determine whether the shifts in the attitude towards violence are apparent.
